Harris Regional Hospital welcomes Anthony McPherron, DO to Harris Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine

SYLVA – Harris Regional Hospital is pleased to welcome board certified orthopaedic surgeon Anthony McPherron, DO to Harris Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Dr. McPherron will begin seeing patients February 6, alongside Lawrence Supik, MD, Ryan Slechta, MD, Douglas Gates, MD, Jud Handley, MD, Robin Pope, PA-C, and Alexis Willey, PA-C, at the practice which is located on the second floor of Harris Regional Hospital. Most recently, Dr. McPherron practiced at Southwest Virginia Orthopedic and Spine in Blacksburg, Va., where he served as an orthopaedic surgeon for Virginia Tech University Athletics, New York Yankees Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Pulaski affiliate, and Bluefield College Athletics. Dr. McPherron serves as a consultant for the New Orleans Saints National Football League (NFL) training camp.
Prior to working in Virginia, Dr. McPherron practiced for 13 years at Specialty Orthopedics, Inc. in Plymouth, Ind., where he founded the Indiana Center for Adult Reconstruction. During his time in Indiana, Dr. McPherron held a number of medical executive appointments with regional hospitals and participated in various research and orthopaedic equipment patent projects. He is also a three-time recipient of the ‘Best Bedside Manner Award’ in orthopedics from Our Health magazine, a Virginia-based publication

Dr. McPherron will complement our three surgeons, one orthopedist, and two physician assistants in a way that provides greater access to orthopaedic and sports medicine care locally.”
Dr. McPherron completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at Tampa General Hospital after a residency in orthopaedic surgery at St. Vincent/Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio where he was named Chief Resident and Resident Educator of the Year. Dr. McPherron also completed a traditional rotating internship at St. Vincent/Mercy Medical Center after medical school at Ohio University where he received a Doctor of Osteopathy. He holds a masters of business administration from Purdue University and is currently pursuing a masters of science in astronomy from Swineburn University.
In addition to seeing patients with orthopaedic needs, Dr. McPherron will participate in the hospital’s longstanding sports medicine program at Western Carolina University and in the 10 area high schools served with athletic training and game coverage.
