Questions to Ask Your Care Team

Questions to ask your Doctor:

  • What type of breast cancer do I have?
  • What is the size of my tumor?
  • Is my cancer hormone receptor positive?
  • What is my HER-2 status?
  • What stage is my breast cancer?
  • Where can I find out more about clinical trials or new treatments for breast cancer? (The nurse navigator can get information for you)

Questions to ask your Surgeon:

  • Am I a candidate for breast conservation surgery?
  • Am I a candidate for sentinel lymph node biopsy?
  • Am I a candidate for breast reconstruction?
  • What is the most minimally invasive option available to me?

Questions to ask your Oncologist:

  • Why do I have to see a medical Oncologist?
  • What role will the medical oncologist going to play in my treatment and survivorship?
  • What are the expected timelines for my treatment plan?
  • Start date?
  • # of treatments expected?
  • Type of treatments: Chemo/Radiation?
  • How long will each treatment take?
  • How will this treatment benefit me?
  • How will this treatment affect my daily life? (Will I be able to work, exercise, and perform my usual activities?)
  • How can I ease effects of treatments? (Aches/pains/nausea/loss of hair)
  • Am I at risk for lymphedema and, if so, how can I reduce my risk?
  • What will my follow-up care include?
    • Check up appointments?
    • Medications to continue?
    • Other info?
  • What do I look for to determine if the cancer may be coming back?
  • Who do I call for questions or problems?
    • Primary care provider?
    • Nurse Navigator?
    • Surgeon?
    • Oncologist?
  • Who can I contact for emotional, supportive help for myself and/or family?
