Harris Regional Hospital Introduces Pro-Nox™ for Enhanced Pain Management at New Generations Family Birthing Center
July 11, 2024
Harris Regional Hospital is proud to announce the introduction of Pro-Nox™ nitrous oxide as a new pain management option for laboring mothers at New Generations Family Birthing Center. Available August 1, this addition aims to enhance the birthing experience by offering expectant mothers a safe, effective, and self-administered method for managing labor pain.
Pro-Nox™ is a unique system that allows patients to self-administer a blend of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen, commonly known as "laughing gas." This analgesic option temporarily blocks pain signals from reaching the brain, providing immediate relief while allowing the patient to remain in control of their pain management.
"We are excited to offer Pro-Nox™ as an additional tool for our patients," said Senior Nursing Officer Stephen Plemmons, MSN, RN. "Whether used independently or as an alternative to other pain management options like an epidural, nitrous oxide provides a valuable option for managing pain during labor. Our goal is to ensure that every mother has the options and education needed to curate a safe and personalized birthing experience."
Nitrous oxide has been used for decades in labor and delivery settings, providing pregnant mothers with a reliable method to alleviate pain and anxiety during childbirth. The Pro-Nox™ system provides medication administration through a mask and is designed to be patient-controlled, ensuring that each woman who is clinically eligible for the intervention can achieve her desired level of comfort throughout labor.
The introduction of Pro-Nox™ at New Generations Family Birthing Center underscores Harris Regional Hospital's commitment to offering high-quality, patient-centered care. By expanding pain management options, the hospital continues to support the diverse needs and preferences of expectant mothers in our community.
